Our sermon this Sunday is from Psalm 141. It’s called “Do Not Return Evil for Evil.”

As Christians, we don’t get a pass from life’s deepest disappointments and harshest injuries. There are times when we a Christian don’t know how we ought to respond, especially when we are wronged. But… we know how we are tempted to respond! Too often, our natural inclination is to return evil for evil. 

In Psalm 141, King David, who foreshadows Jesus, is praying that God would restrain him from returning evil for evil. He is praying over his heart (see vs. 4). We can hardly doubt that Jesus must have known and prayed this psalm as he was betrayed, beaten, and crucified. 

One of my favorite descriptions of Jesus is from the book of Hebrews where it is says that “He learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8,9). I like that because it helps me realize that the Father wanted the Son to know deeply  and experientially what it is really like to live in a broken and a sinful world. Jesus knows the temptation to avenge ourselves. Jesus could have responded to evil with incredible evil when he was mocked by soldiers, humiliated publicly, betrayed by friends, and cruelly crucified like an uncommon criminal. Yet, he learned and modelled the heart of Psalm 141.

Some of you need this psalm right now. We all will at some point in our lives. Would you pray as you prepare for worship this week that God would teach you and grant you a heart that would rather suffer wrong than to respond to evil with more evil? Would you pray for those who are struggling with injustice that God might use this Sunday’s worship to magnify the forgiving, merciful life of Jesus and bring peace and comfort to their hearts? 

This is a beautiful Psalm to study together on a Sunday when we are taking communion together. Prepare your hearts for God’s Word. Pray for God’s grace and mercy for each other. Invite a friend to join us in the worship of our God. See you Sunday, Lord willing.

If you have children in Nursery through 5th Grade, please take a few minutes to complete our Children's Ministry Registration Form for the upcoming ministry year. Even if your child attended last year, we ask that every family complete a new registration so we have the most current contact information, emergency contacts, allergies, and other important details.

As you complete the registration, we also invite you to prayerfully consider serving in our Children's Ministry.

Whether it's rocking babies in the Nursery or helping children learn God's Word in Children's Church, your investment can have an eternal impact. Our ministry is built by faithful volunteers who serve on a rotating schedule, making it easy to both worship and serve.

On the registration form, you'll have the opportunity to let us know if you're interested in serving in:

If you're not quite ready for Christmas, or you love to fill your own shoeboxes, Waterbrooke will be collecting Operation Christmas Child boxes during the week of  November 16-23.

We invite the young adults of Waterbrooke (high school graduates between 18 and 30 years of age) and the surrounding area to participate in fellowship and study in a community seeking to bring glory to Christ.

We will meet at the church every Monday at 6:30 p.m., alternating between teaching and small group weeks.

Whether you’re new or have been around Waterbrooke for a while, we’d love to have you join us as we grow together in faith and community!

Beginning September 22
Join us this fall as we journey through the beautiful story of Ruth—a story of loss, love, redemption, and legacy.

In this 7-session Bible study by Kelly Minter, we’ll walk alongside Ruth through unbearable loss, unexpected love, and a legacy she could never have imagined. Along the way, we’ll see the faithfulness of God woven through every circumstance and discover how He continues to rescue, revive, and restore.
This newly updated study includes fresh content and new teaching videos from Kelly Minter and will encourage us to trust God’s providence even when we can’t yet see what He is doing.

Come grow in God’s Word, deepen friendships, and be reminded that God is faithfully at work in every chapter of our story.
