A Message from Dr. Brian Thomas

A Message from Dr. Brian Thomas

"The Commission of Jesus" | Luke 4:14-30

Dr. Brian Thomas will be leading us through Luke 4:14-20 in this sermon called "The Commission of Jesus".

When Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth, filled with the power of the Spirit, the people were eager to hear from their local hero. But what began with admiration quickly turned to outrage. Why? Because Jesus didn’t come to meet their expectations—He came to announce God’s surprising, expansive mission of mercy.

In this sermon, we explore how Jesus opens the scroll of Isaiah and boldly claims, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me… He has sent Me to proclaim good news to the poor.” This is not just a statement of identity—it’s a declaration of purpose. Jesus reveals that He has come to bring release, healing, and freedom. But when He reminds His audience that God’s grace has always extended beyond Israel—to outsiders like the widow in Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian—the crowd turns violent.

This message invites us to examine our own assumptions: Do we want a Savior who only blesses “our kind”? Or are we ready to follow the Spirit-anointed Son who calls us to a mission of grace, even when it offends?

Construction Update

Construction Update

The glass doors are in, the carpeting has been laid, the new chairs are in the sanctuary and the Ministry Hub is being set up this week!  So it will be wonderful to finally be able to use and enjoy the entire building!

The builders are working on punch list items to fine tune everything and we expect some ongoing work to fix and patch things.  But the vast majority of the work is now complete, so we're getting ready to celebrate!

Things left to be done:
- landscaping: we will be planting sometime during the next two weeks.  If you can help, please contact Yvette Hatch.
- final asphalt coat the week of August 18th
- hydroseeding late August/early September

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact Casey Campbell, Waterbrooke's construction liaison.
