Throughout the world, there continues to be a deep, long groan over COVID, economics, crime, racism, inequities currently and historically. This long groaning is something that most of us feel palpably as we turn on the news and we watch our culture attempting to right the wrongs, fight their fears, and vent their emotions. The narratives that influence different generations, often put us one against the other. This Sunday, we looked at Luke 3:1-22. I called our sermon “The Baptism of the Beloved” because John the Baptist both baptizes Jesus but also reveals that Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and Fire. In this passage, we are called to recognize that while we often rage against what is going on in the world around us, Christ has come to redeem us from the war that is within us. He has not come to save us from the oppression of kings but the oppression of sin.
