God’s Sovereignty over Our Silliness

This Sunday’s message is titled, God’s Sovereignty over Our Silliness. There is an old Monty Python skit called “The Ministry of Silly Walks” where in it, everyone’s walk is absolutely silly. When you read your Bible, Abram, Israel, Moses, and others all seem to walk in a way that seems absolutely contrary at times to who God has called them to be and what God has called them to do. How often do we function in ways that are inconsistent with our beliefs? In this week’s text, Genesis 12:10-20, Abram seems sinfully silly. His emotions, particularly fear sabotage His values. His behavior betrays his faith in God. Yet, as we will see, its not the strength of our faith but the steadfast covenant faithfulness of our God that is our hope. Friends, what will get you on track and on fire for God’s mission is not your ability to do all things right at all times. It is God’s sovereign ability to do all things well with people who often do things badly. Aren’t you glad that God chooses to use sometimes sinfully silly people to work out a glorious saving plan. Let’s bring our spiritual silliness to the feet of Jesus this week and rejoice that our lives are in solid Sovereign hands.

The life of Abraham is a fascinating one because, as we will see, Abraham’s journey was not so much a journey to the land of Canaan but actually a journey towards heaven (see Hebrews 11:16). His destination is not so much an earthly one but a spiritual one. It’s a journey of a fatherless and heirless man into the presence and promise of God. It’s a journey into the very heart of God. God takes a broken family and a broken man and shows him that He will make him into a Father of many nations who reflects the very heart of God the Father Himself. This is an invitation to all of you to bring your brokenness and join us in our study of the life of Abraham. May the story of Abraham’s journey from brokenness to blessing become the story of all who find the hope of God by faith as he did.
