The Facts about Biblical Counseling
What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical Counseling is the process where the Bible, God’s Word, is related individually to a person or persons who are struggling under the weight of personal sin and/or the difficulties associated with suffering.
Ultimately, the hope is that he or she might genuinely change in their inner person to be pleasing to God.
Biblical Counseling is defined by 3 important beliefs:
1) The Bible, given by God, is sufficient for life. When properly understood, it reveals to the believer all the information necessary for one to realize the need for Christ, how to please the Lord, and how to live in a God honoring way — regardless whether one’s circumstances are comfortable or not.
2) The Bible is the authoritative source with which all truth claims (including claims made by science and history) must be evaluated. As a result, we reject all counseling theories that use presuppositions, principles, and methodologies that are inconsistent with the proper understanding of the biblical text.
3) Genuine heart change is totally dependent on the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Is the goal of Biblical Counseling different than other forms of counseling? Definitely. The goal in Biblical Counseling is to honor and glorify God, whether or not relief is obtained. It consists of lovingly confronting people out of deep concern in order to help them make those changes that God requires.
Biblical Counseling is counseling that offers real and lasting hope, according to the Word of God. No problem is beyond the scope of God’s power to transform. Such hope is grounded in the character of God Himself, His Word, His mercy, grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. Biblical Counseling must be centered on Christ and the Gospel.
We believe that wise counsel centers on the life, death, resurrection and promised return of Jesus Christ. Through the Gospel, God reveals the depths of sin, the scope of suffering and God’s grace in the midst of it. Biblical Counseling points people to a person, Jesus our Redeemer, and not to a program, theory or experience. We place our trust in the transforming power of the Redeemer as the only hope to change people’s hearts, and not in any human system of change. Waterbrooke Biblical Counseling Center seeks to lovingly lead people to the hope, resources, power and life that are available only through Christ.
We seek to equip God’s people for life change with the changeless truths of the living Christ so that we may please and honor the Lord and fully enjoy His love and plans for our lives.
