Goal: Biblically-focused worship and fellowship. Bringing students before Christ through devotion, demonstration, and dialogue. Area 51 is the name of the Waterbrooke Christian Church Youth Community. The name comes from the youth’s identity scripture in I Peter 2:11 which reads: “Therefore my friends, I urge you as aliens and strangers in this land to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”
The core gathering for Area 51 is the Wednesday Night Youth Gathering, which takes place the first four Wednesdays of every month from 7pm to 9pm at the church. In this gathering the youth play games, sing contemporary and traditional worship songs, talk through a lesson, and break into discussion groups.
The Wednesday gathering is also led by adults but we encourage the youth to lead the small group discussions with adult moderation. We have several lesson topics during the school year and will primarily work our way through a study of Scripture called The Thread, which demonstrates how the Gospel message is visible throughout all of Scripture. We also have some topical (4-6 week) studies planned which introduce the youth to Apologetics and identifying personal idols which may hinder their spiritual growth.
The discussion groups are broken up into Jr and Sr High students. Because the Wednesday gathering is not tied to the Sunday sermon, it is also attended by many non Waterbrooke youths and provides a great opportunity for the youth to meet and share their faith with new people. Most youth events (campouts, mission trips, day trips, workdays, parties, upcoming studies, etc…) are designed as Area 51 events. Although they will often be announced in the Sunday School gatherings they are generally attended by Area 51 members.
